Research Networks
Collaborative Research Centers (SFB)

Here you will find an overview of all Collaborative Research Centers the Technical University of Munich is involved in.

SyNergy – the “Munich Cluster for Systems Neurology”

The excellence cluster “SyNergy” investigates how complex neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer's disease develop. Using systems neuroscience as a new interdisciplinary approach, researchers can map the many processes involved in neurodegenerative, neuroimmunological and neurovascular diseases. The cluster has been funded since 2012.

Participating Institutions: TUM, TUM University Hospital rechts der Isar, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), LMU University Hospital, MPI for Neurobiology, German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Helmholtz Center Munich, MPI for Biochemistry, MPI for Psychiatry

Network University Medicine (NUM)

The Network University Medicine (NUM) was established in April 2020 as part of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis management. The goal was to better coordinate COVID-19 research at all 36 university hospitals in Germany.

In and beyond the pandemic, the NUM is building National Research Infrastructures for medical health research. Accordingly, the network bundles competencies, resources and research activities. This will significantly improve Germany's ability to deal with pandemics and future threats.

The NUM works closely with the structures of the Medical Informatics Initiative and the German Health Centers.

Medical Informatics Initiative (MII)

The Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) creates the conditions for research and medical care to move closer together. All of Germany's university hospitals are currently working together with research institutions, companies, health insurers and patient representatives to develop the framework requirements that will allow research findings to reach patients directly.

The MII aims to make the best possible use of the opportunities offered by digitization in medicine for healthcare and research. The BMBF is funding the consortia and the cross-consortia use cases with a total of over 400 million Euros during the establishment and networking phase (2018 to 2022) and the currently ongoing expansion and extension phase (2023 to 2026).

The MII is working closely with the Network University Medicine (NUM) to establish and expand digitization in medical research. At the Munich TUM site, the core tasks of the MII are coordinated within the DIFUTURE consortium.
